Using the Harbor Notes Pages
General:
- Usage
- Harbor Notes provide a way to share your local knowledge and experience for the benefit of other Tartan owners who may be visiting your area.
- Your boat must be logged on the site and your owner profile must have been updated within the past 12 months in order to add a Harbor Note. If you access Harbor Notes from a different PC, delete or block cookies, the software will not recognize you as a registered owner.
- If this occurs, update your profile.
- The harbor notes functions work with most browsers.
- Ad blockers and pop-up killers may interfere with some features and should be temporarily disabled.
- Adding Notes
- Click the "Add a Note" link at the bottom of the Harbor Notes page to add a new note.
- Coordinates should point to the subject of the note, ie restaurant, mooring field, etc.
- Coordinates may be chosen from a popup map or entered manually.
- All coordinates are in decimal degress (dd.ddd) with negative west longitude.
- A calculator is included to convert from dm.mm or dms for manual entries.
- Use the Category and Activity selections to identify a topic for the note.
- Short, on topic notes, each pointing to the subject of interest are preferred.
- A single photo may be attached to the note. Max file size is 2.0 mb.
- Any notes you enter may be later edited using the "My Harbor Notes" link.
- Viewing Notes
- The notes listed in the table are controlled by the map view and any filters applied.
- The map is controlled by clicking on it to zoom or by selecting preset views for different regions.
- Optional filters may be applied to show only certain categories, or only notes containing a search term.
- Once the map is zoomed or filters are applied, the table format changes to show the full note.
- Only the filtered notes in the area covered by the map are shown in the table.
- Additional icons and options appear in the expanded notes.
- Trip Planning
- Manipulate the map display to show the area of interest.
- Apply filters as desired to show a specific category or activity.
- Click the compass rose to order the list in the direction of travel.
- Click the "Print" link to print the list.
- Viewing or Printing a Single Note
- Click the map or harbor name to expand the note.
- Click the printer icon to launch a print friendly view of the note.
- Refer to "Table List" below for additional details on this view.
Applying Filters:
- There are several means to filter the notes being viewed.
- Preset Views - Redraw the map for the area or region selected.
- Categories - Show only notes for the category selected.
- Find - Show only notes that contain a search term.
- Searches Harbor Name, Boat Name, Activity and Comments for matches.
- Returns case insensitive, partial word matches.
- Matches in the comment field are highlighted.
- The View, Filter and Find selections may be used singly or in combination.
- Clear any selections not intended to be applied.
- Click the "Go" button to apply the selections.
Harbor Notes Map:
- Harbor Notes are shown on the map with red pins denoting their location.
- Map controls:
- Select a redraw option and click the map to step zoom or pan the view or...
- Click a Harbor Name to quickly zoom in on that harbor.
- Note: The map always recenters on the point clicked.
- Click "activity" to label the map with activities.
- Hint: Use the "Go" button to apply labels without changing the view.
- Color keys in the map and notes table:
- When viewing the default USA map only, the table list is shown in a compact view.
- Once the map is redrawn, the table format changes to the expanded view.
- If a Harbor Note red pin or harbor name was clicked, that pin turns blue when the map is redrawn.
- When red pins overlap, multiple blue pins may appear on the redraw.
- Blue pin notes are shown in blue in the table.
- Zooming the map:
- Select a zoom option and click the map to recenter and step zoom on the location clicked.
- Choose a preset view and click the "Go" button to zoom to that area or region.
- Click a harbor name in the table to quickly zoom in on that harbor.
Table List:
- Harbor notes visible on the map are listed in the table.
- The map coverage and filter selections determine the notes to be shown in the table.
- Sorting the table:
- The default sort order is by date with the most recent entries shown first.
- Click a point on the compass rose to sort by direction.
- The list display has two formats - compact and expanded.
- When first entering the page, the default USA map and the compact table view is shown.
- Once a filter is applied or the map is redrawn, the expanded table view is shown.
- When the table list is expanded, additional icons become visible.
- The anchor icon launches a nautical chart of the harbor centered at the note coordinates.
- The printer icon launches a print friendly view of the note in a new window.
- All information concerning the note is consolidated in a single view.
- The nautical chart and NOAA chart number are included.
- The camera icon appears if a photo is attached. Click the camera to view the photo.
Nautical Charts:
- The anchor icon launches a nautical chart of the harbor centered at the note coordinates.
- Once launched, the nautical chart is completely independent of the note.
- Options on the chart popup do not affect the Harbor Notes page.
My Harbor Notes Admin:
- Clicking the Admin link at the bottom of the Harbor Notes page launches the admin page.
- Harbor Notes that you created will appear in a table listing.
- Click the "Edit" button to edit a note.
- Allowed edit functions are:
- Revise the comments.
- Revise the coordinates.
- Add, change or delete an attached photo.
- Delete the note.
- Please use care when editing your notes. If you accidently erase an entry or delete a note it cannot be recovered.
